Teenagers

Who We Serve

The youth served by Good Will Farm are 11-17 year olds having difficulty in their home, school, and/or community. They are either wards of the Department of Human Services (DHS), wards of a county probate court or clients from other agencies, such as mental health. The Good Will Farm provides youth with a 24-hour structured program in a homelike environment and is licensed by the State of Michigan as low secure residential service.

Mission

Good Will Farm will ensure a safe, supportive, nuturing environment, which encourages youth to reach their individual potential and successfully integrate into society.

Beliefs

Self-esteem, respect, dignity, and growth are nurtured through caring relationships and realized through action and achievement.

There is hope for a better future for all youth and the Good Will Farm must strive to provide that hope to residents and their families.

Goal

Confident, caring, and capable youth!

Treatment

The major components of the treatment program are individualized educational programming in the on-grounds school (or at Houghton High School), educational groups, individual and group counseling, therapeutic activities, and the structured daily living routine. Structured in these major components are opportunities for volunteering in the community, building trust and self-esteem through adventure activities, and learning life and independent living skills. We also have a six-week summer school program, offering classes such as Creative Writing (1 credit), Computer Technology (0.5 credits), structured math problem solving, structured math facts program, and other classes based on educational needs.

The program centers on a level system. Each level outlines to the student the goal of the level and the responsibilities he/she must accomplish to advance to the next phase. All youth have their progress reviewed regularly at weekly treatment team meetings.

Graduation

A youth graduates from the program by successfully advancing through orientation and the four levels. The average time to graduation for a student is nine to twelve months. Aftercare plans are completed during the senior level. As soon as all plans are finalized, the youth is officially discharged.
