Services for Boys
At the Good Will Farm we recognize that boys have important needs that need to be met to assist them on their journey into manhood including a sense of belonging, adventure, independence, and an important role in life. To assist them on this journey, our program incorporates the following strategies:
- Provide a school atmosphere that focuses on learning differences.
- Educate boys about personal responsibility, trustworthiness, respect, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
- Teach them how to manage their anger, show empathy, and resolve conflicts peaceably.
- Provide activities that allow boys to compete and perform well to build skills and develop self-image.
- Address as many parts of their life as possible (home, school, social, physical, emotional, safety, etc.)
- Involve them with their family in setting treatment goals that meet their needs.
- Conduct family and health education groups specific to males.
- Provide education and life stories on healthy and unhealthy relationships between males and females.
- Identify what they like and do well, and build on those strengths and abilities.
- Encourage them to express their feelings, opinions, and beliefs.
- Give them a voice in program development, procedure, and evalulation.
- Assign them to a support group for sharing and helping one another.
- Allow staff time and opportunity for one-on-one trust building and support with them.
- Identify possible mentoring relationships for them while in treatment and in their community when they return home.
- Help them volunteer to serve others.
- Use restorative justice techniques to help them heal a family, peer or community issue.
- Provide them with a journal for daily writings.
