Residential Program Philosophy
Youth come to the Good Will Farm from the court system with the title "delinquent" tagged to their name. At Good Will Farm, delinquency is a symptom of a larger problem. In most youth, the bigger issue is a history of neglect and/or abuse that has resulted in poor social, emotional, and academic skills. Although the "crime" committed by youth needs to be addressed and resolved if possible, the Good Will Farm does not structure the program to punish or consequent for any behavior before arriving. Being removed from home to residential is in fact the consequence of their behavior.
Instead, the Good Will Farm focuses on treatment in the form of education, skills, experiences, and relationships. This treatment model is aimed at helping youth build resiliency. Resiliency can be defined as the knowledge, skills, attitude, and support youth have for strength and guidance when faced with challenges.
To help build resiliency, the Good Will Farm focuses on:
- Identifying and building youth assets and strengths.
- Identifying the family assets and strengths and how these can be used to solve issues.
- Role modeling positive behavior.
- Providing and encouraging learning and extracurricular activities.
- Encouraging youth to explore and identify values and beliefs.
- Teaching health, relationship, social, communication, problem solving, and decision-making skills.
- Promoting community involvement.
- Helping youth identify goals and finding the resources to achieve them.
- Setting clear expectations with youth.
- Helping youth identify why they have reason to feel good about themselves!
